Thomas Struth (born 1954).
The German photographer grew up in Duesseldorf at the school of Bernd and Hilla Becher. Known to the collector community for his photographs of museums, family portraits and for the black and white series of Duesseldorf, New York and Rome, which he often prints in large sizes.
The series of shots on “Roma”, 12 BW photos taken by the artist Thomas Struth in 1988, show the capacity for synthesis exercised by Struth’s eye. The black and white of the photos and the thirty years that have passed since the artist’s stay in Rome present the visitor with a Rome that is unthinkable today. The photos are gelatin silver prints, 12×16.5 cm. Particularly significant for the gallery is the participation as a guide to the discovery of Rome of an artist who is a friend of Struth and a friend of the gallery: Vittorio Messina, whom we find thanked by Struth on the back of some photos.
Thomas Struth’s series “Roma” was exhibited in its entirety in the exhibition PHOTO20ESIMO” MUSEO D’ART CITTA’ di LUGANO, 2009 curated by Bruno Corà and is entirely documented in the exhibition catalog published by Silvana Editore
